Sometimes it is fun to just get together with others who are like-minded...I enjoy doing this on a weekly basis with my friend as we create artwork together. Here are 2 of the latest pieces.....

Sometimes artists get "art blocks", times when artwork just doesn't happen, times when life gets in the way, energy disappears, life happens...sometimes all it takes a little time getting away...a time to refresh and renew...
I spent some time working through a few workshops learning pen and ink washes (watercolour)...and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The results of this learning were these... Meet "Charlie"....As we have been living in a Covid19 world, with limited access to parks and trails, I took the opportunity to park along the lake in Lowbanks and walk along Lakeshore Drive. Along that drive is a beautiful horse, who I have lovingly called "Charlie." He is an extremely friendly horse that comes running up to you if you stop to have a visit...he is behind an electric fence, so he doesn't get too close to you (a proper 6 feet), but will gently encourage you to come to the gate so he can visit with you...the sign on the fence says, do not feed the horse, so I just walk slowly by, yearning to take some time to give some attention to this absolutely beautiful animal. The painting is done with soft pastel on velour board. It is from a reference photo I took on my walk. The green on the outside of the painting is painters tape, that I will remove when I frame it...the painters tape gives the painting a crisp edge. I had fun squinting my eyes to pick out some background colours for the mane and started painting rather flamboyantly, enjoying a relaxing painting, without any stress about the end result. Once I had some base colours down, I worked on his eye, giving life to the painting, which helps me finish the painting, feeling the love and admiration I have for the animal that I felt when I initially walked by him. Periodically, I still do that walk, just so I can have a walk-by "visit" with "Charlie."
Here is a black and white sketch using chalk pastel pencils. After I completed the black and white sketch, I liked it so much that I tried the same picture in oil. (the chalk pastel has a black background- first six pictures, the oil has a dark grey background- last four pictures)
Here is a step by step of an oil painting I recently finished.
Painting a picnic scene in the middle of winter, with snow on the ground, reminds me of days gone by when a short drive and quiet reflections were a high priority. Definitely will be doing this again once warmer weather arrives :) This is a picture of a couple of children playing at the water's edge, with the Port Rowan Lighthouse in the distance and a picnic in the foreground. Port Rowan is a lovely community that I'd like to visit more often :) This was a fun piece I made for one of my grandsons. What a wonderful heritage to have a history of farming. A farm presents endless hours of exploration, imagination and fun for children.
I love old barns, they have such character and I wonder what story the barns could tell us of years gone by. And what boy wouldn't absolutely love to be in and around a tractor! I finished this piece in January 2020. Be sure to check out my Facebook page or Instagram page to see up-to-date in progress pieces I am working on as they are completed! Andrea ThompsonMy paintings are little bits of me, moving from within me and out onto the canvas. Each painting comes from an emotional connection I feel with the painting’s inspiration. Archives
